NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES

Internet Protocol Domain Name Service (IP/DNS)

ESnet provides Internet Protocol Domain Name Service to the ES community through two separate name servers, DNS-WEST and DNS-EAST. These name servers provide the primary IP address translations for the es.net domain. In addition, either server can be queried to resolve IP address translations for any IP host on the Internet.

In addition, these machines provide secondary name service for many of the ESnet sites. Employing this functionality, sites can off load many name server queries destined for their local name servers to DNS-WEST and DNS-EAST. This procedure has the advantages of providing a backup to a site's name server while reducing its load.

DEC Distributed Naming Service (DECdns)

DECdns is a DECnet/OSI network-wide service that makes it possible to use network resources without knowing their physical locations. Users and applications can assign DECdns names to resources such as nodes, disks, and files. The creator of the name also supplies other relevant information (such as the resource's network address) for DECdns to store. Users then need only supply the name, and DECdns will act as a lookup service, providing the rest of the data when necessary.

The OMNI namespace has been created to support the transition to DECnet Phase V within the DECnet Internet. ESnet supports two root DECdns servers within the ESnet portion of the DECnet Internet (ESnet-DECnet). As ESnet sites bring up DECdns servers, they are added to the OMNI namespace.

Distributed Time Services

The purpose of the Internet's Network Time Protocol (NTP) is to synchronize the clocks on multiple networked hosts. Redundancy and sanity checking are features of the protocol. ESnet provides several stratum-1 time servers, each with a radio clock served by the U.S. time standard broadcast from Fort Collins, CO, by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). NTP software is available from ESnet in the directory Public-Domain.

Authentication Services (Under Development)

ESnet operates an experimental Kerberos Version 5 Authentication server. Kerberos provides a strong form of user identification, and use of Kerberos can eliminate the need to send passwords over the Internet.
