Subject: Progress report on building ESnet4
The deployment of the new ESnet4 network is progressing
very well. Most of the new equipment for the IP network,
and
several interim switches for Science Data Network (SDN),
has
been received and tested. The deployment of the new IP
backbone for ESnet4 is on schedule and is about 30% complete.
The current ESnet4 progress and projected rollout plan and
schedule is located at www.es.net/ESnet4.
The optical node deployment and provisioning of the new
hubs
at the Level3 facilities has proceeded very well, and the
optical
nodes are installed from the East Coast to about the Rocky
Mts.
The cages in the Level3 hubs that ESnet and Internet2 will
share (ESnet has 2-3 equipment racks at each hub), and the
power distribution to those cages and racks has proceeded
very
smoothly. Level3 is doing an excellent job and is to be
commended.
The coordination between Level3, the Indiana NOC, Internet2,
and ESnet has been excellent, and the Indiana NOC has
provided invaluable assistance in the ESnet4 deployment
work:
Our sincere thanks to Indiana and Internet2 for this assistance.
Most of the ESnet4 deployment has, of course, been done
by
Jim Gagliardi and his ESnet team and they have been on the
road for a week at a time several times a month since January
installing the ESnet equipment in the new hubs.
The ESnet Engineering group is currently testing hardware
candidates for the MPLS capable switches that will be used
to
support the new OSCARS virtual circuit services on the first
full SDN network that will be deployed by early to mid-CY08.
Some of the switches that are being used in SDN during 2007
will be replaced by these next generation OSCARS compatible
MPLS switches in the CY2008 SDN rollout.
If you have questions about any of this feel free to send
Bill,
Joe, or Jim email. We will post any resulting clarifications,
as
well as new information as it becomes available, on the
ESnet4
web site.
