SPOT Suite Transforms Beamline Science

August 18, 2014

Scientists from Berkeley Lab’s ALS, CRD and NERSC are teaming up to create new tools for reducing, managing, analyzing and visualizing beamline data. To facilitate this new workflow they tapped ESnet engineers to set up data transfer nodes between three ALS beamlines and NERSC.   Read More

Weathering the Flood of Big Data in Climate Research

July 11, 2014

ESnet's Eli Dart moved 56 TB of climate data from 21 sites to NERSC, a task that took three months. In contrast , it took just two days to transfer the raw dataset using Globus from NERSC to the Mira supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory. (Select image to enlarge.)Big Data, it seems, is everywhere, usually characterized as a Big Problem. But researchers at Lawrence…  Read More

Confirmed: Stellar Behemoth Self-Destructs in Type IIb Supernova

May 21, 2014

For the first time, astronomers have direct confirmation that a Wolf-Rayet star died in a violent explosion known as a Type IIb supernova. Using the iPTF pipeline, researchers caught supernova SN 2013cu within hours of its explosion. These observations are providing valuable insights into the life and death of the progenitor Wolf-Rayet. These stars are interesting because they enrich galaxies with the heavy chemical elements that eventually become the building blocks for planets and life.   Read More

ESnet’s Mike Bennett Retiring after 26 Years of Making Key Connections

April 28, 2014

Since he started working at the lab back in 1988, Mike Bennett has found himself in the middle of a number of interesting transitions. But come April 30, he’ll make his last one – transitioning into retirement. When Bennett started as an engineering technologist at the Bevatron, one end of the control room was filled with analog equipment featuring knobs, dials, oscilloscopes and other…  Read More

100 Gbps Test Link Sets Pace for Faster Trans-Atlantic Data Transfers

April 4, 2014

Data transfers from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland to sites in the U.S. have historically taken different paths – 15 in all – via 10 gigabit per second (Gbps) links separately managed by three research networks in the U.S. and Europe. So what would happen if those massive datasets were instead transferred using a single 100 Gbps connection?  That was the thinking behind an…  Read More
