ESnet6 Honored with DOE Project Assessment Award

Energy Sciences Network’s ESnet6 project was finished more than two years ahead of schedule and significantly under budget. In recognition of this unusual feat, the DOE presented ESnet with a special Project Assessment Award. Read more.

2019

CENIC Innovations in Networking Award for Research and Education Network Partner

CENIC selected ESnet to receive the 2019 CENIC Innovations in Networking Award for R&E Network Partner in recognition of ESnet’s contributions to a number of collaborative initiatives, including cybersecurity strategy, network design, and technology adoption. Read more.

Outstanding Mentor Award

Ling Liang, a program manager in the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), has been recognized as an Outstanding Mentor by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Workforce Development & Education in recognition of her STEM mentorship and accomplishments for FY2018. 

2018

SCinet Spirit of Innovation Award

ESnet was among five organizations recognized with the SCinet Spirit of Innovation Award for playing key roles in delivering 800 gigabits-per-second of long-haul bandwidth to the Supercomputing Conference this year. Read more.

2017

DOE Early Career Award

Mariam Kiran, a research scientist in the Energy Sciences Network’s (ESnet’s) Advanced Network Technologies Group, has received a 2017 Early Career Research Program award from the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science. Now in its eighth year, the award supports exceptional researchers during critical stages of their formative work by funding their research for five years. Read more.

CENIC Innovations in Networking Award for Experimental Applications

Kate Mace, Lauren Rotman and Jason Zurawski of ESnet, along with Wendy Huntoon of KINBER and Marla Meehl of UCAR, are co-recipients of the CENIC 2017 Innovations in Networking Award for Experimental Applications. The award recognizes their work to expand the diversity of the SCinet volunteer staff and provide professional development opportunities to highly qualified women in the field of networking. 2015

CENIC Innovations in Networking Award

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) named ESnet as a recipient of the 2015 Innovations in Networking Award for High-Performance Research Applications for their 100-Gigabit Software-Defined Networking (100G SDN) Testbed. Read more.

Secretary of Energy Achievement Award

In May 2015, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz recognized ESnet staff members with a DOE Secretarial Honor Award for their development of OSCARS, the On-demand Secure Circuits and Reservation System. The Secretarial Honor Awards are the department's highest form of non-monetary employee recognition. Individual and team awardees are selected by the Secretary of Energy. Read more.

2014

Best Student Paper Award at Hot Interconnects

Henrique Rodrigues, a Ph.D. student in computer science at the University of California, San Diego, who is working with ESnet, won the best student paper award at the 2014 Hot Interconnects conference. Known formally as the 2014 IEEE 22nd Annual Symposium on High-Performance Interconnects, Hot Interconnects is the premier international forum for researchers and developers of state-of-the-art hardware and software architectures and implementations for interconnection networks of all scales.

2013

IEEE-SA Standards Medallion

Michael Bennett, head of ESnet’s Network Engineering Group, has been awarded an IEEE-SA Standards Medallion for his work in helping to create energy-saving standards for devices with Ethernet connections. The standards are expected to help save terawatts of otherwise-wasted electricity by automatically switching networked components to energy-saving modes when not in use. Read more.

R&D100 Award

ESnet received the R&D100 award for OSCARS (the On-demand Secure Circuits and Reservation System) version 0.6, which was finalized and released in June 2012. OSCARS can automatically create end-to-end circuits, crossing multiple network domains. Development of OSCARS version 0.6 was led by Guok, with significant contributions from Evangelos Chaniotakis, Andrew Lake, Eric Pouyoul and Mary Thompson, all of ESnet. OSCARS is currently used by more than 40 networks, including wide-area backbones, regional networks, exchange points, local-area networks and testbeds.  »Read More.

2012

InformationWeek’s Top 10 Government IT Innovators

For the second time in four years, ESnet was named one of the year’s top government IT innovators by InformationWeek Government magazine. In late 2012, the magazine announced its top 15 innovators in government IT, with ESnet cited for its new 100 gigabit-per-second nationwide network funded as the Advanced Networking Initiative and launched into full production in November 2012. »Read More.

ESnet5 Deployment Team Named as “Fierce” Innovators

The ESnet5 Deployment Team, charged with rolling out the 100-Gigabit-per-second national network that entered production in November, was named to the first annual "Fierce 15" list of the top federal employees and teams who have done particularly innovative things. The list was announced Nov. 27, 2012 by Fierce Government, a newsletter covering the U.S. government. Read More.

2011

ESnet Receives Two Internet2 IDEA Awards

Two ESnet projects received IDEA (Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications) awards in Internet2’s 2011 annual competition for innovative network applications that have had the most positive impact and potential for adoption within the research and education community.  Internet2 recognized OSCARS (On-Demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System), developed by the ESnet team led by Chin Guok, including Evangelos Chaniotakis, Andrew Lake, Eric Pouyoul and Mary Thompson. Contributing partners included Internet2, USC ISI and DANTE. ESnet’s MAVEN (Monitoring and Visualization of Energy consumed by Networks) proof of concept application was also recognized with an IDEA award in the student category.  Read more.

ESnet Invited to Join GreenTouch Consortium

ESnet has been invited to join GreenTouch, a global industry initiative dedicated to dramatically improving the energy efficiency of information and communications technology (ICT) networks by a factor of 1,000. ESnet will collaborate with existing GreenTouch members to research and invent technologies that will enable more energy-efficient networks, plus create the network architecture, specifications and roadmaps that will define them. »Read more.

ESnet's OSCARS Receives University of California Larry L. Sautter Award Honorable Mention

ESnet’s On-Demand Secure Circuits and Reservation System (OSCARS) was selected for honorable mention in the 2011 Larry L. Sautter Award Program by the University of California Information Technology Leadership Council. The Larry L. Sautter Award was established in 2000 to encourage and recognize innovative deployment of information technology in support of the University of California's mission of teaching, research, public service and patient care. The Sautter Award honors projects developed by faculty and staff in any department at the 10 UC campuses, the UC Office of the President (UCOP), and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). »Read more.

ESnet was honored with a 2009 Excellence.Gov award for its achievements in leveraging technology.
