On October 11, 2022, Internet pioneer Vint Cerf will keynote the unveiling of ESnet6, ESnet's next-generation network supporting large-scale scientific data movement. ESnet is the United States Department of Energy (DOE)'s dedicated scientific network.

Cerf is often referred to as one of the "Fathers of the Internet." In 1973, he co-designed TCP/IP, the foundational communication protocols that defined the architecture of the modern-day Internet. He co-founded the Internet Society, a non-profit organization that promotes the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. He has also served as the chairman of the board of The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization which operates the domain naming system.

Currently, Cerf is the chief Internet evangelist for Google, where he enables technologies to support the development of advanced, Internet-based products and services, and is a member of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research Advisory Committee (ASCAC), which provides valuable, independent advice to the Department of Energy on a variety of complex scientific and technical issues related to its Advanced Scientific Computing Research program.

"We are thrilled to have Vint speak at our upcoming event. His contributions and guidance as part of ASCAC have been indispensable both to ESnet and the Department of Energy at large," said Inder Monga, the Executive Director of ESnet and Division Director of Scientific Networking at Berkeley Lab. "We believe that ESnet6 will bring unprecedented capabilities to support scientific research, and we look forward to hearing his insights about the impact that our next-generation network will have on the future."

The ESnet6 Unveiling will be broadcast online to the public on October 11, 2022 through YouTube and our online event platform. In addition to Cerf's keynote, the event will feature a keynote from Ian Foster, the director of Argonne’s Data Science and Learning Division, as well as talks and demonstrations from scientists illustrating the importance of high-performance networking.
