VIDEO: ESnet — Powering the Future of Scientific Research

May 18, 2026

Fifteen thousand miles of fiber. Nearly 70 terabits per second of capacity. One mission: to connect the people, places, and instruments driving humanity's greatest discoveries.

Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) — the U.S. Department of Energy's sole high-performance networking user facility — links all 17 national laboratories, major scientific instruments worldwide, and nearly 270 research and commercial networks across five countries. Every year, ESnet moves more than 2.6 exabytes of scientific data.

For four decades, ESnet has co-designed the network with the scientific community. Today, we're pioneering programmable networking, AI-driven operations, and quantum networking — the technologies that tomorrow's science requires.
